Pet photography is the one portrait session where the star might lick the lens. That's fine with us. Here at Noreen Owens Photography in Howell, Michigan, the Furr-ever Love Project celebrates the dogs, cats, and other furry family members who sleep on your side of the bed. And yes, you get to be in the pictures too.
Pet photography is professional portrait art built around your animal instead of people. The goal is the same as any good portrait: to show who they really are. However, the subject doesn't take direction, so patience matters more than poses.
A phone photo of your dog on the couch is still worth keeping. But a pet photography session gives you something different: good light, a clean background, and a photographer waiting for the moment your pet looks like themselves. Then you have a portrait you'd actually frame.
The Furr-ever Love Project is our ongoing pet photography project, and it's about the love between you and your animal. That's why owners are welcome in the frame. So whether you have a mischievous kitten, a loyal dog, or another furry friend, they all qualify.
Every pet in the project is featured in our Furr-ever Love ebook. In fact, there's already a 2025 volume and a 2026 series. After that, you can order your favorite images as keepsakes, like a canvas or a framed print.
The project format also gives the session a purpose beyond a single picture. Your pet becomes part of a collection of animals and the people who love them. It's one of several portrait projects we run at the studio.
The best way to prepare for pet photography is to keep your pet's day normal and calm. A tired, relaxed pet is much easier to photograph than one ready to sprint.
Here are a few things that usually help:
Exercise first. For dogs, a long walk before the session takes the edge off.
Bring their favorite treat or toy. Something they'll look up for gets you the alert, ears-up expression.
Groom a day or two ahead. A fresh cut the morning of can leave a pet stressed and itchy.
Pack a leash and a familiar blanket. Also, a blanket from home can make a new place smell safer.
Plan your own outfit. Since you'll be in some frames, pick solid colors that won't fight your pet's coat.
Cats, on the other hand, usually do better with less fuss. Bring them in a carrier they already know, and let them come out on their own time.

What is pet photography?
Pet photography is professional portrait work focused on your animal, with good light, a clean background, and plenty of patience. At Noreen Owens Photography in Howell, Michigan, you can book through the Furr-ever Love Project. Owners can join their pets in the portraits, and the project features every pet in its ebook.
Can I be in the photos at a pet photoshoot?
Yes, you can absolutely be in the photos at a pet photoshoot. The Furr-ever Love Project is built around the bond between pets and their people, so owners are welcome in the frame. Plan solid-colored clothes that won't clash with your pet's coat, and expect a mix of solo pet portraits and photos together.
How do I get my pet ready for a photoshoot?
Most pets do best when they're calm and a little tired. Take your dog on a long walk first, bring a favorite treat or toy, and groom a day or two ahead rather than that morning. For cats, use a carrier they already know and let them come out at their own pace.
Do pet photographers photograph cats too?
Yes, a pet photographer can photograph cats as well as dogs. The Furr-ever Love Project welcomes kittens, dogs, and other furry family members. Cats usually need a slower, quieter session, so a familiar carrier and a little extra patience help. Mention your pet's personality when you apply, so the session can be planned around it.
