Halloween Portraits in Howell, Michigan: Not Just for Kids

Halloween portraits are turning into one of the biggest requests we get this time of year. For the first time, we built an entire Halloween portrait project around it. We're calling it the Haunted Halloween Project. It's for anyone who wants beautiful, creative wall art for the spooky season, not just a costume snapshot for Instagram.

Noreen wanted this project to skew adult from the start. "Halloween has gained so much momentum, it's becoming more and more popular, like Christmas, honestly," she said while we were planning the calendar this year. And she's not wrong. According to the National Retail Federation's most recent Halloween survey, Americans spent a record $13.1 billion celebrating last year. Nearly three quarters of the country took part. That's not a niche holiday anymore. That's a full season people plan around, the same way they plan around the December holidays.

Step Into the Story: The Haunted Halloween Project

Halloween has always been about becoming someone, or something, else for a little while.

For children, it’s the excitement of putting on a costume and suddenly becoming the witch, superhero, vampire, princess, ghost, or mysterious character they’ve been imagining for weeks.

For adults, it’s a chance to play again.

To be dramatic. Glamorous. Dark. Mysterious. Beautifully strange.

That’s exactly what inspired our Haunted Halloween Project.

A Halloween portrait session is a chance to step out of the everyday and into a portrait experience built around imagination, personality, and a little bit of Halloween magic.

Come Alone, or Bring Your Favorite People

The Haunted Halloween Project can become whatever you want it to be.

Bring your children.

Bring your partner.

Bring your best friend.

Come as a family.

Or come completely on your own and create something spectacular just for you.

Coordinated characters, elaborate costumes, classic Halloween looks, theatrical glamour, spooky children, elegant witches, dramatic villains. We want you to make it your own.

The best sessions are the ones that feel personal.

Bring your favorite Halloween costumes and we'll do the rest!

More Than a Costume Moment

Our approach has never been about simply capturing an image.

We create portraits intentionally.

We think about lighting, expression, posing, connection, personality, and the little details that transform a photograph into something that feels cinematic and timeless.

That same philosophy carries into our Haunted Halloween Project.

We want to create something you’ll still love when Halloween is long over.

Something worthy of becoming artwork.

Something that makes you stop when you walk past it.

And something that reminds you exactly how much fun you had creating it.

Because Some Memories Deserve More Than What's on Your Phone

You will certainly take plenty of Halloween images on your phone.

Standing on the porch.

Holding the candy bucket.

Running out the door before trick-or-treating.

And we hope you take every one of them.

But this experience is different.

This is about slowing everything down long enough to create something extraordinary from a season that normally flies by.

For children, it preserves a little piece of their imagination.

For adults, it preserves a side of themselves they may not get to show very often.

For families, it becomes another story you’ll tell.

“Remember the year we all dressed up and did that incredible Halloween portrait?”

That’s the kind of memory we want to create.

A Halloween portrait session runs about 40 minutes to an hour, depending on the concept. That's enough time to get your full costume looks without rushing. It's also enough time to grab a few non-costume images too, if you want them. We always encourage that second option. It gives you more to choose from once it's time to decide what actually goes on the wall.

We'll also plan around what you're bringing. A detailed costume with props and layers needs a bit more setup time than a simple one. So the more you tell us ahead of time, the smoother your session runs.

Turning Your Costume Into Halloween Portrait Wall Art

Here's the thing about Halloween portraits done well: they don't read as a costume party snapshot at all. They read as art. That's the whole point of building this in a studio instead of catching it on a phone at a party. Moody lighting, real backdrops, and a photographer who's spent years learning how to make people look like themselves, just dressed differently.

These are wall pieces, the same as any other portrait created here. A costume you loved deserves more than one Instagram story that disappears after 24 hours. If you already love our approach to family or senior portraits, this is that same eye for detail, aimed at something a little more fun and a little more dramatic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Halloween portraits just for kids?

No. This project was actually built with adults in mind first, though kids are welcome too. Noreen wanted this to feel like a costume you've put real effort into finally getting the wall art treatment it deserves, whether that's a family in coordinated costumes or a grown-up who's been planning a look for months.

Where can I find Halloween portrait sessions near Howell, Michigan?

Noreen Owens Photography runs its Haunted Halloween Project sessions in the Howell, MI studio, serving Livingston County and surrounding communities. It's a first-year offering, so sessions are limited. Reach out directly to check current availability before October fills up.

What are some good Halloween portrait ideas?

The strongest ideas start with a costume you're already excited about, not one built specifically for a session. Bring your own concept and send images ahead of time so the studio can plan lighting and backdrop around it. Adding a few non-costume shots to the same session gives you more finished pieces to choose from.

Can Halloween portraits work as wall art, not just a costume snapshot?

Yes, that's the whole point of this project. Instead of a quick snapshot at a party, these are studio sessions with real lighting and backdrops, finished as wall pieces the same way any other portrait here is. The goal is something you'd actually want hanging up, not something that lives only on a phone.

Do Halloween portraits have to be scary or spooky?

No. Spooky and moody lighting is part of the studio's style, but the costume and concept are entirely up to you. Whether your look is scary, funny, or just elaborate, the session is built around your specific costume and idea rather than a fixed spooky theme.

What should I expect from a Halloween studio portrait session?

Expect a real, unhurried session, about 40 minutes to an hour long, built around the costume you send in advance. You'll get your full costume look plus a few non-costume images if you want them, so you have more than one option when it's time to choose what goes on the wall.
