A magical photoshoot doesn't require a plane ticket or a theme park wristband. Ours happens in a studio on Old US 23 in Howell, Michigan, in front of candlelit shelves crowded with owls and potion bottles. Kids put on a robe, pick up a wand, and point it at a cauldron. Then the cauldron glows gold. We call it the Wizard Project, and it's open now for a limited time.

A Howell, Michigan portrait session designed to create timeless images for local clients.

What Is a Magical Photoshoot?

A magical photoshoot is a themed portrait session built around a story instead of a plain backdrop. There's a set, a costume, and props to hold. After the session, editing adds the parts a camera can't catch, like sparks flying off a wand. So the finished portrait looks like a page from a storybook, but it still looks like your child.

At Noreen Owens Photography, themed sessions often start with a favorite book, movie, or character. So far, that has meant woodland fairies, knights and dragons, and a Santa who sprinkles magic dust. The Wizard Project is our wizard school version, with dark wood, candlelight, and a lot of owls.

Inside the Wizard Project Set

Every magical photoshoot needs a set worth staring at, so we packed this one. Behind your family, dark wood cabinets form the backdrop, and every shelf holds something worth a second look. For example, candles, old keys, labeled potion bottles, and owls are tucked into wooden crates.

In front, we stack leather trunks for kids to stand on, next to a tall birdcage. A spell book is propped open to a recipe for turning a frog into a prince. One bottle on the floor is labeled "Eye of Newt." And yes, there's a skull.

Then there's the cauldron. Everyone gathers around it with wands out, and we photograph the spell. The gold sparks come later, in the edit, because real sparks and long robes don't mix.

Who Is a Magical Photoshoot For?

A magical photoshoot is for anyone in your family who'd enjoy holding a wand, and that's usually more people than you'd guess. Kids are the obvious fit. However, the grown-ups in our wizard portraits wear robes too, and they grin just as hard as the kids. Adults absolutely love this spell binding experience.

Here's what some sessions have looked like. First, a toddler with a head full of curls aimed a wand straight at the camera and smirked. Then two kids stood on a stack of trunks and cast spells side by side. Next to them, a grown-up held a newborn in a tiny robe and striped tie. The baby was not impressed. Meanwhile, another family sat on the floor around the cauldron with three wands going at once.

So a wizard photoshoot works for one child, for siblings, or for the whole family. Even someone too little to hold a wand can be in the picture, as that newborn proved.

Why a Themed Session Works So Well for Kids

A themed session gives kids a job, and that changes how they act in front of a camera. "Stand still and smile" is hard for a five-year-old. "Stir the potion" is easy. Because they're busy playing, the expressions we get are real ones: concentration, mischief, a proud little smirk.

Pediatricians like this kind of play, too. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to make room for make-believe, including letting kids act out pretend scenes and characters. A wizard set is basically that advice with better lighting.

That's also why a magical photoshoot ages well. Years from now, you'll have a portrait of the year your child carried a wand everywhere.
